WA Ferry Tracker › San Juan Islands ferry reservation alerts
🔔 Set up a free WhatsApp alertThe Anacortes/San Juan Islands route is the busiest reservation route Washington State Ferries runs. Summer weekends, holiday weekends and Friday afternoon sailings toward the islands often show "no space" weeks ahead. But "full" on the reservation site is rarely final: WSF releases space in stages, and travelers cancel or change their plans every day. A San Juan Islands ferry reservation alert watches the sailings you care about and tells you when space comes back, so you do not have to keep refreshing the WSF page.
How WSF releases San Juan Islands reservation space
According to WSF's vehicle reservations page, space on the Anacortes/San Juan Islands route opens in three phases rather than all at once:
| Release | When (Pacific time) | Standard vehicle space |
|---|---|---|
| 1 – season opening | About two months before the sailing season starts, 10 a.m. | 30% (plus 90% of tall/oversize space) |
| 2 | Two weeks before each sailing date, 7 a.m. | Another 30% |
| 3 | Two days before each sailing date, 7 a.m. | Final 30% |
| Held back | Day of travel | About 10% for stand-by and emergency vehicles |
That means a sailing that looks sold out two months ahead will normally get fresh space two weeks out and again two days out, both at 7 a.m. Pacific. WSF's own example: space on a 5 p.m. Wednesday sailing is released at 7 a.m. on Monday. On top of the scheduled releases, cancellations put space back at random times. Those random openings are exactly what an alert is for.
Routes our alerts cover
- Anacortes → Friday Harbor (San Juan Island) and Friday Harbor → Anacortes
- Anacortes → Orcas Island and Orcas → Anacortes
- Anacortes → Lopez Island
- Anacortes → Shaw Island
- Inter-island sailings are first come, first served and do not need a reservation.
The live tracker also shows today's reservation space for each of these routes, refreshed through the day, so you can see at a glance which sailings still have room.
How the alerts work
- Sign in with your WhatsApp number. You get a 4-digit code; there is no app to download and no password.
- Create a scheduler. Choose the route, the date and the sailing times you would accept, for example "Anacortes to Orcas, Friday, any sailing between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m."
- We keep checking. The tracker checks WSF's public reservation availability every few minutes.
- You get a WhatsApp message when one of your sailings shows space, with a link to book.
- Book on WSF. All reservations are made on the official WSF site. We never book, hold or sell space.
Tips for actually getting the spot
- Be ready at 7 a.m. two weeks and two days before your sailing. Have your WSF account signed in and vehicle details saved.
- Widen your window. An alert for four or five sailings is far more likely to fire than one for a single 3:10 p.m. boat.
- Book both directions. Reservations are one-way, so set a scheduler for the return trip too. Eastbound Friday Harbor and Orcas sailings on Sunday afternoons are often the hardest.
- Act fast. Cancelled space can be taken by someone else within minutes. Open the alert, tap through and book.
- Arrive on time. WSF asks reserved vehicles to arrive 45–60 minutes early at Anacortes and the islands, or the space can go to stand-by. No-shows are charged a fee.
- Have a plan B. About 10% of space is held for stand-by, and walk-on passengers never need a reservation; see our walk-on guide.
