Orcas Island (Eastsound, Moran State Park, Mount Constitution) is reached by the Washington State Ferries Anacortes/San Juan Islands route, landing at Orcas Village. Orcas takes vehicle reservations in both directions, which is the single biggest thing to plan around.
⛴️ Check live reservation space + get WhatsApp alerts1. Book both directions
Book your return trip when you book your outbound trip. On summer and holiday weekends, the Sunday and Monday sailings back to Anacortes usually fill first. A reservation is one-way, free to make, and charges a no-show fee if you don't use it, so cancel the ones you won't use.
2. Know the three release tiers
WSF releases reservation space in tiers: about 30% two months before the season, 30% two weeks before the sailing, and 30% two days before the sailing (7 a.m.). The last 10% is kept for stand-by. If your sailing is full, check again right after the two-week and two-day releases, or let WA Ferry Tracker watch it and WhatsApp you when space opens.
3. Arrive early
Plan to be in the terminal lane 45 to 60 minutes before departure, even with a reservation. Late arrivals can lose their spot. Anacortes is roughly 1.5 to 2 hours' drive from Seattle without traffic. Allow more on Friday afternoons.
4. Consider walking on
Walk-on passengers and bicycles don't need reservations. If you're staying in Eastsound and don't need a car every day, walking on can save you the whole reservation scramble. Check island shuttle and taxi options before you go.
5. Watch for service alerts
Vessel swaps and crew shortages sometimes cancel sailings. Sign up for WSF route alerts and check the terminal cameras before you leave home.
6. Busy days to avoid
- Friday afternoon westbound and Sunday afternoon eastbound in summer
- Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Sunday after
- Holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day)
