WA Ferry Tracker › Walking on a Washington State Ferry
⛴️ Need a car spot? Get a WhatsApp alertWalk-on passengers never need a reservation on Washington State Ferries (WSF). Reservations only apply to vehicles, and only on the Anacortes/San Juan Islands and Port Townsend/Coupeville routes. If car space is sold out, walking on is often the easiest way to still make your trip.
Buying a ticket
Buy at the terminal ticket booth or kiosk, or online through WSF's ticketing site before you go. Adults, seniors, youth and riders with disabilities pay different fares; kids under a set age ride free. Check the current fare table on wsdot.wa.gov, because fares change most years.
One-way fare collection
On many routes WSF collects passenger fares in one direction only. On the San Juan Islands route, for example, fares are collected westbound at Anacortes, so the trip back to the mainland is already covered. Inter-island trips have their own rules, so confirm on WSF's fare page.
How early to arrive
WSF asks walk-on passengers to be aboard a few minutes before departure, and boarding closes before the boat leaves. On busy holiday or summer sailings, give yourself extra time for the ticket line and parking at the terminal.
Bikes and kayaks
Bicycles ride for a small surcharge and don't need a reservation. Cyclists usually board first, ahead of cars, from the vehicle lanes. Follow the terminal staff's directions.
Getting around without a car
On the San Juans, Friday Harbor is walkable from the dock, and seasonal shuttles, taxis, bike and moped rentals operate on several islands. Book rentals ahead in summer.
Bringing the car after all?
If you decide you need a vehicle and the sailing is full, WA Ferry Tracker watches reservation space and sends a WhatsApp alert when a spot opens up. See also how to get a reservation when it's sold out.
