WA Ferry Tracker › Port Townsend–Coupeville ferry reservation alerts
🔔 Set up a free WhatsApp alertThe Port Townsend/Coupeville route links the Olympic Peninsula with Whidbey Island's Coupeville (Keystone) terminal. It is one of only two Washington State Ferries routes that take vehicle reservations, alongside Anacortes/San Juan Islands, and it runs smaller boats than the big central Puget Sound routes. On summer weekends, festival weekends in Port Townsend and holidays, reservation space can disappear quickly. A Port Townsend–Coupeville reservation alert watches the sailings you pick and pings you on WhatsApp when space opens up.
How reservations work on Port Townsend/Coupeville
This route works differently from the San Juans. Per WSF's reservations page:
| When | What is released |
|---|---|
| About two months before the season starts, 10 a.m. Pacific | 80% of vehicle space, through a virtual waiting room |
| Day of travel | The remaining 20% is held for stand-by and emergency vehicles |
There are no two-week or two-day releases here. Once the seasonal release sells out, the only way new reservation space appears is when someone cancels or changes a booking. That is why alerts are especially useful on this route: openings are unpredictable, and they are often gone within minutes.
How the alerts work
- Sign in with your WhatsApp number on the Ferry Tracker home page. A 4-digit code verifies it; there is no app to install.
- Create a scheduler for Port Townsend → Coupeville or Coupeville → Port Townsend, with your date and the range of sailing times that work for you.
- We check WSF's public availability every few minutes.
- You get a WhatsApp message the moment one of your sailings shows reservation space, with a link to book.
- Book on the official WSF site. We never make, hold or resell reservations.
Tips for getting on a full sailing
- Be flexible on time. Midday and midweek sailings free up more often than Friday afternoon westbound or Sunday afternoon eastbound.
- Set alerts for both directions. Reservations are one-way.
- Keep your WSF account signed in with your vehicle saved, so you can book in under a minute when an alert arrives.
- Arrive early. WSF asks reserved vehicles to arrive 30–45 minutes before departure on this route. Late arrivals can lose their spot, and no-shows are charged a fee.
- Watch the weather and tides. This crossing is exposed, and WSF sometimes cancels or delays sailings for tides, wind or vessel issues. If service is disrupted, existing reservations get priority, and new reservations may not be available.
- Stand-by is real. With 20% of space held back, arriving early for stand-by can work outside peak times.
- Consider the alternative. Whidbey Island is also reachable by the Mukilteo–Clinton ferry (no reservations, first come first served) or by road over Deception Pass.

Do you need a reservation for the Port Townsend–Coupeville ferry?
Vehicle reservations are strongly recommended. WSF releases 80% of space about two months before the season and holds 20% for stand-by. Walk-on passengers and bicycles do not need one.
Does WSF release more Port Townsend reservations two weeks or two days out?
No. Unlike the San Juan Islands route, Port Townsend/Coupeville has a single seasonal release of 80%. New space after that comes from cancellations, which is what alerts catch.
How early should I arrive for a Port Townsend reservation?
WSF asks reserved vehicles to arrive 30–45 minutes early on this route.
Is the alert free?
Yes. WA Ferry Tracker alerts are free and delivered on WhatsApp, with no app to install.
