Friday Harbor on San Juan Island is the largest town in the islands and is usually the last domestic stop on the Anacortes/San Juan Islands route. Like Orcas, it takes vehicle reservations both ways.

| Step | Why |
|---|---|
| Reserve outbound and return | Return sailings on Sunday and holiday Mondays sell out first. |
| Note the release dates | About 30% of space opens two months before the season, 30% two weeks before the sailing, and 30% two days before (7 a.m.). Full sailings often get space back at these times. |
| Know your vehicle size | Fares and reservations depend on vehicle length and height. Reserve the right size, especially with a trailer, roof box, or RV. |
| Arrive 45–60 min early | A reservation holds a spot only if you check in on time. |
| Cancel what you won't use | Unused reservations can be charged a no-show fee. |
When your sailing is full
- Check right after the two-week and two-day releases.
- Try an earlier or later sailing the same day. Mid-day weekday sailings are often easier.
- Set a scheduler in WA Ferry Tracker for your date and times. It checks every few minutes and sends a WhatsApp message when space opens, so you can book right away.
- Stand-by is possible (about 10% of space is held back), but expect waits on busy days.
Do you need the car?
Friday Harbor's town center is walkable from the terminal, and there's seasonal island transit plus rentals. A walk-on trip needs no reservation at all.
